Jun 06 2008: Keira eyes My Fair Lady remake

Keira Knightley is in talks to follow in the footsteps of Audrey Hepburn and star in a remake of My Fair Lady. The 23-year-old will star as Eliza Doolittle, the humble cockney flower girl who makes good in Edwardian high society.

Producers will keep the story rooted in 1912 London and are in talks with actors to star opposite Knightley as Doolittle's upper-crust tutor, Henry Higgins.

My Fair Lady is Lerner and Loewe's musical adaptation of Pygmalion, a stage-play by George Bernard Shaw. The production broke box office records when it debuted on Broadway in 1956 and made a star of the young Julie Andrews. The 1964 film version, starring Hepburn and Rex Harrison, went on to win eight Oscars. It featured the songs I Could Have Danced All Night, Wouldn't it Be Lovely and Get Me to the Church on Time.

Bernard Shaw's plot has become something of a Hollywood staple down the years. Aside from My Fair Lady, other unofficial adaptations of Pygmalion include the Eddie Murphy comedy Trading Places, Pretty Woman and the 1999 teen outing She's All That, starring Freddie Prinze Jr and Rachael Leigh Cook.

Knightley is becoming something of a devotee of the period piece. Later this year she will appear in both the Dylan Thomas drama The Edge Of Love and 18th century tale The Duchess. After that, work is expected to begin on King Lear, in which she will play Cordelia alongside Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow.

While her acting has occasionally come in for criticism, Knightley shouldn't have too much problem with Lerner and Loewe's famous songs. The actor plays a singer in The Edge of Love, which features a section in which she performs the song Blue Tahitian Moon (see our video above). She reportedly had singing lessons for the role.

May 31 2008: Hobbit Star Wanted

Although director Guillermo del Toro and producer Peter Jackson recently said that casting on The Hobbit won't start in earnest until next year, the rumor mill is suggesting that the filmmakers already have the actor in mind for the lead role of Bilbo Baggins.

According to The One Ring and MSN, via British tabloid Daily Express, Scottish actor James McAvoy (soon to be seen in Wanted) is the frontrunner to play Bilbo. McAvoy is no stranger to fantasy films, having previously played "Mr. Tumnus" in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

"A number of names have been doing the rounds, including Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black, but James (McAvoy) is the one the film's bosses really want," the Daily Mail's alleged insider told the paper. "They're expected to have talks soon so hopefully it could be confirmed in the not too distant future."

May 19 2008: Keira Knightley to star in film of King Lear

It looks to me like the last time Shakespeare's "King Lear" was adapted into a film it was back in 1999 with Brian Blessed playing the title role. IMDB shows the King making his way into a feature film approximately 20 times and it looks like 21 is in order as Anthony Hopkins will play the title role with Keira Knightley starring as his daughter Cordelia and Gwyneth Paltrow as Regan, Lear's treacherous middle daughter.

The news comes from the UK's Telegraph citing the film was announced at the Cannes Film Festival and will be made on a budget of $35 million and will feature epic battle sequences, according to its makers....

...."King Lear" tells the story of Lear, the aging king of Britain, who is stepping down from his thrown and will divide his kingdom among his three daughters; Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. He tests his daughters asking them to put their love for him into words and while Goneril and Regan give flattering answers, Cordelia says nothing giving reason that words cannot describe how much she loves her father. Despite being Lear's favorite daughter, he is outraged and Cordelia is banished. Cordelia ultimately marries the king of France despite the fact that she brings with her no land, which is when Lear realizes his tragic mistake, but it just might be too late.

Apr 19 2008: Thomas biopic to headline Edinburgh film festival

The Edge of Love, a film about the life and loves of the poet Dylan Thomas, has been selected as the opening night gala for this year's Edinburgh international film festival. It is directed by John Maybury and stars Keira Knightley, Matthew Rhys and Sienna Miller.

This year's film festival runs from June 18-29. The Edge of Love is due to open in UK cinemas on June 20.

Maybury remains best known for his 1997 Francis Bacon biopic Love is the Devil and for shooting The Jacket, a psychological thriller starring Knightley. The Edge of Love has been scripted by Sharman Macdonald, Knightley's mother.

"I couldn't be happier to be opening this most auspicious festival with this utterly seductive and fascinating film, which stars some of the most charismatic young performers in the business, and affirms John Maybury as one of our most important directors," said Hannah McGill, the event's artistic director. "It's a film that I personally adore, and opening with it is the perfect expression of our commitment to intelligent, impassioned, exciting new film-making."

The Edge of Love focuses on a pivotal time in the lives of the Welsh poet and the women who orbit him. It stars Matthew Rhys as Thomas, Knightley as his childhood sweetheart Vera and Miller as his wife, Caitlin.

Another Thomas biopic, Caitlin, was being produced by Pierce Brosnan's Irish DreamTime company last year, with Rosamund Pike as the poet's wife and Michael Sheen as the Welshman. While no official announcement has been made, its lack of appearance suggests it may now never see the light of da

Mel Gibson is bringing the 1996 novel ‘’The Drowner’’, by Robert Drewe, to the big screen says The West Australian.

The $30 million production, which is being produced by Gibson’s company Icon Films, will be shot in Perth and the Goldfields and be the biggest budget feature film made solely in this State. Gibson has yet to decide whether he’ll direct – but says if the script is as good as he expects it to be, he may will indeed helm it.

The newspaper says that James McAvoy (“Atonement”) is being courted for the lead role of the English engineer who works with C.Y. O’Connor. Emily Blunt, Cate Blanchett and Barry Humphries are also said to be on the producers’ wish-list.

“This is a great Western Australian story but it also a great contemporary story. What could be more relevant than an epic story about water or its lack?” said Drewe, who compared ‘’The Drowner’’ to the recent Daniel-Day Lewis Oscar winner ‘’There Will Be Blood’’.

Mar 09 2008: Keira sings on 'Edge of Love' soundtrack

Keira Knightley will sing on the soundtrack to her upcoming film The Edge of Love.

The album will feature tracks Knightley performs in the film, including 'Blue Tahitian Moon', 'Maybe It's Because I Love You Too Much' and 'Drifting And Dreaming'.

The film, a World War II period drama, stars Knightley as Vera Phillips, a woman who falls in love with Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.

Last year Knightley admitted she struggled with the role.

"I can't really sing," Knightley admitted. "I had to have a few lessons, but once I started doing it, a sound emerged that wasn't too disagreeable."

Suggs, Siouxsie Sioux, Patrick Wolf and Beth Rowley will also contribute to the soundtrack.

The Edge of Love is written by Knightley's mother Sharman Macdonald and directed by John Maybury. Matthew Rhys (Dylan Thomas) and Sienna Miller (Thomas' wife Caitlin MacNamara) co-star in the film.
